A chaotic shooting incident unfolded near Boston when a man carrying an assault-style rifle allegedly fired dozens of rounds at moving vehicles along a busy roadway, leaving two people seriously injured before police and an armed civilian stopped the attack.
Authorities said the violence erupted Monday afternoon on Memorial Drive in Cambridge, Massachusetts, causing panic among drivers and pedestrians in the heavily traveled area near the Charles River. Investigators reported that the suspect fired repeatedly at random vehicles, striking multiple cars and triggering a massive emergency response.
Two Victims Suffer Critical Injuries
Officials confirmed that two men traveling in separate vehicles sustained life-threatening gunshot wounds during the attack. Emergency crews rushed both victims to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Witnesses described terrifying scenes as drivers abandoned their vehicles, ducked for cover, and tried to escape the gunfire. Several vehicles, including a Massachusetts State Police cruiser, were reportedly damaged by bullets during the incident.
Law enforcement officials said the suspect fired more than 50 rounds while moving through traffic.
Trooper and Armed Civilian Stop the Shooting
The gunfire ended after a Massachusetts State Police trooper and an armed civilian, identified by authorities as a former Marine, confronted the suspect and opened fire.
The suspect, identified as 46-year-old Tyler Brown of Boston, was struck multiple times and taken into custody. Officials said his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Authorities praised the rapid response that prevented further casualties and confirmed there was no ongoing danger to the public following the incident.
Investigation Continues Into Motive
Investigators are still working to determine what led to the violent outburst. Officials said there appears to be no connection between the suspect and the victims who were shot.
The suspect is expected to face multiple criminal charges, including armed assault with intent to murder and firearms-related offenses.
Police maintained a strong presence in the area for several hours as investigators collected evidence and examined damaged vehicles at the scene.
