Horrific Attack at Local Soccer Match in Salamanca

At least 11 people were killed and 12 others injured in a brutal shooting at a soccer field in the Mexican city of Salamanca, located in the central state of Guanajuato, local officials confirmed. The incident unfolded Sunday afternoon just after a community soccer game when a group of armed individuals opened fire on spectators and players.

City authorities say ten victims died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries later at a hospital. Among the injured are a woman and a child, according to municipal officials.

Violence Tied to Broader Crime Challenges

The mayor of Salamanca described the attack as part of a worsening crime trend in the region, urging federal assistance to restore security. Guanajuato has frequently recorded some of Mexico’s highest homicide numbers, driven largely by conflicts between organized criminal groups.

Authorities from the Guanajuato State Attorney General’s Office have launched a formal investigation and are coordinating with federal security forces to track down the perpetrators. Officials have pledged to strengthen patrols and support victims’ families as the inquiry continues.

Community Impact and Security Response

The assault occurred in the Loma de Flores neighborhood of Salamanca, a city long challenged by gang violence linked to fuel theft and drug cartel disputes. Residents described chaos and terror as gunfire erupted just as the match concluded.

While the federal government reported a decline in the national homicide rate in recent years, local leaders acknowledge that isolated surges in violence remain a grave concern in hotspots like Guanajuato.
