An 80-year-old man has been found and freed after living for nearly two decades in a windowless basement in Helsinki, Finland, in what authorities are calling an “extraordinary” case. The elderly man was discovered in extremely poor condition, lacking access to everyday facilities like a bathroom or kitchen, and is now under medical care as police continue their investigation.

Windowless Basement: Shocking Living Conditions

Police carried out a search in a detached home in northern Helsinki on January 19, after receiving information from another agency. Inside, officers found the elderly man confined to a basement room without windows or essential utilities. The space lacked a toilet, washing area, and any means to prepare food, conditions described by investigators as degrading and unsafe.

Investigation into Possible Exploitation

Three people — two men and one woman around 60 years old — were detained in connection with the discovery, though they have since been released. Authorities believe the suspects knew the man and are examining whether they may have exploited his vulnerability for financial gain. While initial reports suggest the man entered the household voluntarily many years ago, his health and circumstances worsened dramatically over time.

Recovery and Ongoing Inquiry

Following his rescue, the elderly man was immediately placed under appropriate care for his physical condition. Police continue to interview those involved and assess how the situation went unnoticed for so long, while the public and officials alike await further developments in the inquiry.
