Tragedy in Lake Cargelligo: Three People Fatally Shot
Three individuals — two women and a man — were fatally shot in the rural New South Wales town of Lake Cargelligo on Thursday afternoon, authorities confirmed as a large-scale police operation continues. Another man survived and was taken to hospital with serious but stable injuries.
The shooting spanned two locations in the tight-knit community, with emergency services responding shortly after reports of gunfire in the late afternoon.
Lockdown and Police Manhunt Underway
Police have imposed a lockdown across the town of Lake Cargelligo, about 600 kilometres west of Sydney, as officers hunt the alleged shooter, who remains at large. Residents were urged to stay inside for their safety while tactical units and other law enforcement resources scour the area.
Assistant Commissioner Andrew Holland described the ongoing response as extensive, with officers establishing multiple crime scenes and warning the public to avoid certain neighbourhoods as the investigation unfolds.
Community in Shock and Broader Context
The small Central West town, home to around 1,100 people, has been deeply shaken by the violence. Local officials and lawmakers have expressed sympathy for the victims’ families and stressed the importance of community support in the aftermath of the tragedy.
The shooting comes at a time of heightened concern over gun violence in Australia, following restrictive firearms reforms passed nationally earlier this week. Lawmakers recently approved tighter background checks and a gun buyback scheme in response to previous fatal shootings.
