A former security agent for Ohio Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and his wife have been arrested on federal drug trafficking charges, according to law enforcement officials. The arrest involves allegations of transporting and distributing large quantities of illegal narcotics through the U.S. mail, prompting responses from authorities and Ramaswamy’s campaign team.

Ex-Bodyguard Arrested Alongside Spouse in Narcotics Probe

Federal authorities took Justin Salsburey, 43, and his wife, Ruthann Rankin, into custody on charges of conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances late last year. The couple’s arrest stemmed from an investigation that uncovered hundreds of parcels allegedly containing illegal drugs, including pills tainted with fentanyl and methamphetamine, delivered to their Ohio residence.

Law enforcement claims around 261 separate packages were sent to the home from August 2024 through late 2025, prompting federal charges connected to trafficking. Rankin, who previously worked as a schoolteacher, has been placed on leave from her job.

Campaign Reaction and Background Checks Under Scrutiny

Ramaswamy’s campaign spokesperson said the family was “alarmed” by the allegations and confirmed that the security company immediately removed Salsburey from their protective detail upon learning of the charges. Officials noted Salsburey had passed multiple background screenings — including checks by the FBI and state authorities — as well as pre-employment and random drug tests prior to joining the security team.

The campaign emphasized its commitment to safety and accountability, stating authorities should hold those accused responsible if the charges are proven in court. Salsburey remains in custody at the Franklin County jail, while Rankin has been released pending further proceedings.

Law Enforcement Details and Ongoing Investigation

Federal investigators with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and other agencies played a central role in tracking the alleged trafficking operation. The charges include conspiracy to distribute and intent to distribute significant amounts of illegal drugs, many received through the mail and potentially connected to broader distribution networks.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by federal authorities to disrupt narcotics distribution channels utilizing postal services, especially involving highly potent substances like fentanyl.
