The fatal attack occurred as students were attending review sessions ahead of final examinations, prompting widespread grief across the university community and beyond.

Victim Identified as Beloved Community Member

Ella Cook, a sophomore from Birmingham, Alabama, was publicly named during a remembrance service by members of her church, where she was remembered for her compassionate nature and vibrant presence. Cook, who began her studies at Brown in 2024, was celebrated by friends and family as a dedicated student and supportive friend whose loss has deeply affected those who knew her.

Shooting Unfolds Amid Final Week Chaos

The violent episode unfolded around 4:05 p.m. local time in the Barus & Holley engineering building, where a review session was underway. A gunman opened fire inside the packed room, striking multiple students and forcing an immediate lockdown across campus. Authorities confirm the shooting resulted in two fatalities and nine injuries, with several victims still receiving medical care.

Law enforcement initially detained a person of interest in connection with the incident, but that individual was later released as investigators continue to pursue leads and gather evidence. Police have released footage and urged witnesses to come forward with any relevant information as the investigation progresses.

In the aftermath, Brown University students, faculty and local residents have held vigils and laid flowers at memorials to mourn the victims. The university has canceled the remainder of final exams and is offering counseling and support services for students and staff affected by the tragedy.

Friends, classmates and community members continue to honor Cook’s memory, describing her as a “bright light” whose kindness and spirit left a mark on those around her. The broader Brown community has expressed solidarity, grief and a collective call for healing following the senseless violence.
