Unprovoked Stabbing at Iconic NYC Department Store

NEW YORK — A shopping trip turned violent Thursday afternoon at Macy’s Herald Square when a 38-year-old visitor from California was stabbed by another woman inside the store. The victim had been changing her infant daughter’s diaper in a seventh-floor bathroom when the attack occurred just before 3 p.m., according to law enforcement.

Police say the victim suffered multiple stab wounds to her back and arm and was rushed to a local hospital in stable condition, where she is expected to recover fully. Her 10-month-old child escaped unharmed.

Suspect in Custody, Faces Serious Charges

Responding officers quickly detained 43-year-old Kerri Aherne of Tewksbury, Massachusetts, at the scene. She now faces an array of charges including attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon, police announced. Aherne is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

Authorities have not publicly stated a motive for the attack, which they describe as unprovoked. Law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation and have not confirmed whether Aherne has legal representation.

Store Response and Community Reaction

Macy’s officials expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing that the safety of customers and staff remains a top priority. The attack has unsettled some shoppers at the iconic Manhattan destination, which draws tourists and locals alike, especially during the busy holiday season.

In response, community members and visitors have called for increased security measures within the department store, though many say Macy’s generally feels safe despite this alarming episode.
