Guilty Plea Brings Closure in 2023 Murder Case

In a dramatic turn in a high-profile homicide case, 20-year-old Luis Cardona Jr. has admitted his role in the 2023 killing of Mike Torres Jr.. On October 17, 2025, Cardona reversed his earlier “not guilty” plea and formally pleaded guilty to murder, waiving his right to a jury trial. A judge will now determine his sentence, with a hearing scheduled for January 9, 2026.

From Fugitive to Confession: How the Case Unfolded

  • The fatal shooting occurred in the early hours of October 3, 2023, on East Stewart Street, when officers responded to a “shots fired” call and found Torres Jr. with fatal gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • After the crime, authorities quickly traced a suspect vehicle — a white Chevy Trax — and obtained search warrants for two homes. A SWAT team recovered evidence and detained multiple individuals.
  • By October 2024, three suspects — Javier Gonzalez-Santiago, Mauro Azahel Perales and Oscar Ivan Trevino Serna — had already been arrested in connection with the crime. Cardona, the final suspect, fled to Monterrey but was located and captured by Mexican authorities and U.S. Marshals, then extradited back to Laredo.

What the Guilty Plea Means

By pleading guilty to both first-degree murder and charges related to organized criminal activity — offenses that carry penalties ranging from five years to life in prison — Cardona has placed his fate in the hands of the court. Sentencing next January will decide whether he receives a long-term prison term.

The conviction is the final piece in Laredo’s fifth homicide case of 2023 tied to organized crime, closing a chapter in what had been a complex investigation involving cross-border cooperation, multiple arrests, and extensive police work.
