In a dramatic turn in a high-profile homicide case, 20-year-old Luis Cardona Jr. has admitted his role in the 2023 killing of Mike Torres Jr.. - The fatal shooting occurred in the early hours of October 3, 2023, on East Stewart Street, when officers responded to a “shots fired” call and found Torres Jr. with fatal gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
- After the crime, authorities quickly traced a suspect vehicle — a white Chevy Trax — and obtained search warrants for two homes. A SWAT team recovered evidence and detained multiple individuals.
- By October 2024, three suspects — Javier Gonzalez-Santiago, Mauro Azahel Perales and Oscar Ivan Trevino Serna — had already been arrested in connection with the crime. Cardona, the final suspect, fled to Monterrey but was located and captured by Mexican authorities and U.S. Marshals, then extradited back to Laredo.
