In Vandalia, Illinois, law enforcement has arrested a 43-year-old man in connection with the death of his 14-year-old step-niece. The teenager’s body was discovered inside a tote hidden in an RV behind the family residence after being reported missing earlier that morning. Prosecutors allege the girl was sexually assaulted and strangled with jumper cables before her remains were concealed.

Suspect Identified and Taken into Custody

The victim’s adoptive mother reported her missing early morning on November 14. Within hours, officers located the girl’s body in an RV parked behind the home, prompting a joint investigation by the Vandalia Police Department, the Illinois State Police (ISP), and the Illinois Child Death Investigation Task Force. The primary suspect, her step-uncle, had been living in the same RV and formerly served as her caretaker. He was taken into custody the same day.

Charges and Allegations

The suspect is now facing multiple serious charges: two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of criminal sexual assault, one count of concealing a homicidal death, and one count of concealment of a death. Investigators say she was strangled using jumper cables and then placed in a tote within the RV. The suspect has an extensive criminal history including previous allegations of child sexual abuse, burglary, and stolen vehicle possession.

Ongoing Investigation and Legal Proceedings

The suspect remains incarcerated in Fayette County Jail as the investigation progresses. Authorities have indicated that additional evidence is being reviewed and further charges may follow. The case has shocked the community and brought increased attention to child protection protocols and oversight of caregivers inside the home.
