Standoff Ends in Fatal Shooting

Washington — A tense confrontation that ended in a fatal police shooting unfolded at a home in Northwest D.C. on Friday evening, when officers say a 41-year-old man lunged at them with a knife and screwdriver. The man, who had been arrested at the same residence just a day earlier for violating a protective order, died after one officer opened fire.

Around 7 p.m., officers responded to a home on Reservoir Road NW following reports that the alarm system was triggered. Inside, they found the suspect, identified by police as Kevin Booker, but he refused to exit the home upon officers’ requests.

The Weapon, The Trigger & The Investigation

Police say they entered the home through an unlocked door and located Booker on the second floor. During the search, he allegedly lunged at officers wielding both a knife and a screwdriver. That prompted an officer to fire his weapon. Booker was rushed to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities have confirmed that the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave while the police department’s Internal Affairs division investigates the incident.

Background: Prior Arrest & Legal Action

The day before the shooting, Booker was arrested at the same residence after a resident had obtained a civil protective order against him on October 30. That order had been in place when he allegedly returned to the home and violated it, leading to the initial police involvement.
