In a dramatic blow to professional baseball’s image, federal prosecutors have announced the indictment of two pitchers from the Cleveland Guardians—Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz—accused of accepting bribes in order to manipulate specific pitches for bettors. The case underscores the mounting concern over prop-bet vulnerabilities and gaming-related corruption in major-league sports.

Allegations and criminal charges at a glance

According to the indictment, federal agents say both pitchers were involved in a scheme to rig bets on individual pitches during MLB games. The filings claim the players “deprived” the club and the league of honest services, and defrauded online betting platforms. One example cited involves a spike in wagers on a particular pitch thrown by Ortiz that landed in the dirt during a June 27 game.
Meanwhile, MLB confirms it contacted law-enforcement at the start of its probe and says the investigation remains ongoing.

Defense responses and league action

Ortiz’s attorney issued a strong denial, stating the pitcher did nothing to intentionally influence a game for gambling purposes. He emphasized that none of the alleged bettors or transfers in the Dominican Republic were tied to any wrongdoing. Clase, on the other hand, has reportedly been practicing abroad and told his agent he doesn’t gamble and is awaiting MLB’s determination.
The league placed both players on non-disciplinary leave after integrity monitors flagged unusual betting activity earlier in the year. The rise of prop-bets—wagers on granular actions such as number of strikes, balls or specific pitches—has become a significant threat to sport integrity.

Broader context: the prop-bet problem in professional sports

Prop-betting has exploded across legalized sports-bet markets in recent years, allowing bettors to wager on highly specific in-game events. Sports-integrity analysts warn that such bets lower the threshold at which manipulation becomes feasible. States like Ohio are already reconsidering legal frameworks, with officials arguing that the betting on “one pitch, one play” was likely never envisioned when sports-gambling laws were passed. As teams and leagues grapple with these risks, this case marks one of the most serious federal prosecutions to date in the MLB.
