MOSCOW — A Russian regional court has handed down a five-year prison sentence to an American man after discovering a rifle and ammunition on his private yacht when it docked in the port city of Sochi last year. The ruling highlights the strict enforcement of Russia’s firearm entry laws and underscores risks for foreign seafarers navigating international and coastal regulations.

The man, identified by Russian authorities as Charles Wayne Zimmerman, pleaded guilty to charges related to illegally transporting and carrying a firearm into Russian territory. According to court officials, Zimmerman admitted to having the rifle on board but said he kept it for self-defense and did not understand that Russian law prohibited bringing it into the country.
Zimmerman’s yacht had completed an extended journey that began in July 2024 in North Carolina, went through Portugal and the Mediterranean, and entered Russian waters via the Black Sea, arriving near Sochi in June 2025.

The defendant told the court that he embarked on the transatlantic cruise after connecting with a woman from Kazan via the internet and intended to meet her in person. He acknowledged failing to research Russian firearms laws and assumed that the weapon, kept onboard for personal security during the long voyage, could remain on the vessel.
The court released footage showing the rifle and ammunition seized on the yacht, reinforcing the evidence used in arriving at the conviction.
