Emmy-winning actor and filmmaker Timothy Busfield has been taken into custody in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after surrendering to authorities on multiple child sexual abuse charges connected to alleged inappropriate conduct with young performers. The 68-year-old faces felony counts that could lead to significant prison time as the legal process begins.
Arrest and Charges
Busfield voluntarily turned himself in to law enforcement on January 13, 2026, days after a judge signed an arrest warrant in Bernalillo County. He has been charged with two counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor and one count of child abuse, with prosecutors seeking to keep him in custody pending trial.
According to police filings, allegations involve two 11-year-old twin boys who say the unlawful conduct occurred during their work on the set of the television series The Cleaning Lady, which Busfield directed and produced.
Allegations and Defense
Authorities state the alleged conduct spanned from late 2022 into 2024, and one of the accusers has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress symptoms as a result of the incidents.
In a video statement released after his surrender, Busfield denied the accusations, calling them “lies” and vowing to contest the charges in court. His legal team has questioned aspects of the allegations, and his wife, actress Melissa Gilbert, has declined comment amid ongoing proceedings.
Professional Background and Next Steps
Busfield is best known for his roles in acclaimed television dramas, including The West Wing and Thirtysomething, and has worked extensively behind the camera as a director and producer. His first court appearance on the current charges is scheduled in the coming days.
