In a harrowing incident near Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, authorities allege that a grandson poured gasoline on his grandmother and set her on fire inside a camper. The 39-year-old suspect, now in custody, is facing multiple serious charges as the woman fights for her life with severe burns covering the majority of her body.

Victim Found With Terrible Burns, Calls Out Attacker

Responding to 911 calls of a fire and a woman screaming for help, deputies arrived at the scene to find the elderly victim lying outside a burning camper. Her clothes were essentially destroyed and she was gasping for air. According to an arrest affidavit, while still conscious, she was able to identify her attacker: “He poured gas on me… He’s lost it.” The probe revealed that the suspect allegedly used a cigarette-lighter-style device to ignite the fuel.
Burn specialists estimate that around 70 % of her body was affected by third-degree burns, and a helicopter medevac transported her to a major hospital facility in Nashville in critical condition.

Suspect’s Behavior, Arrest and Charges

The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Christopher Medula, allegedly told a nearby camper-resident witness that “I had to do it,” “She’s the devil,” and “I’m Jesus,” while a fire engulfed the camper.
The witness held Medula at gunpoint until deputies arrived. Law-enforcement found the lighter and other evidence at the scene, and Medula was taken into custody by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. He now faces charges including attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and aggravated arson. Bond has been set at $1 million.

Legal and Community Impact

This case highlights the extreme danger of domestic violence coupled with arson and how quickly a situation can turn catastrophic. With charges of both intentional harm and reckless endangerment, the suspect’s alleged actions carry serious penalties under Tennessee law. Moreover, community members are struggling with the disturbing nature of the crime and its implications for elder safety in private homes.
