Cuban officials have disclosed the names of seven out of ten individuals tied to a violent maritime clash this week that resulted in the deaths of four men and injuries to six others. The confrontation occurred when a Florida-registered speedboat was intercepted in Cuban territorial waters and gunfire erupted between its occupants and Cuban border forces. Authorities claim the group was armed and intended to carry out hostile actions on the island.
Seven Suspects Identified After Fatal Exchange
Cuba’s Interior Ministry confirmed on Thursday that seven of the ten men aboard the speedboat have now been identified. Among the deceased is Michel Ortega Casanova, a U.S. citizen whose family described him as deeply passionate about Cuban politics. The ministry alleges that the vessel’s passengers engaged Cuban troops in a gunfight after being challenged near the northern coast of Villa Clara Province. Weapons, protective gear and other tactical items were reportedly found on the craft.
Officials named several of the wounded suspects, including Conrado Galindo Sariol, José Manuel Rodríguez Castelló, Cristian Ernesto Acosta Guevara and Roberto Azcorra Consuegra. Two others — Amijail Sánchez González and Leordan Enrique Cruz Gómez — were identified as wanted by Cuban authorities for alleged involvement in planning or supporting violent acts previously described as terrorism.
What Happened at Sea: A Deadly Confrontation
The clash took place on February 25, when Cuban border patrol units intercepted a 24-foot speedboat approximately one nautical mile off Cayo Falcones. According to the government, the men aboard fired first, wounding the commander of the Cuban patrol, and prompting return fire that killed four and injured six. Cuban officials assert the group was attempting an armed infiltration of the island.
Cuban authorities have also reported the arrest of a man on land accused of providing logistical support for the operation. Meanwhile, the United States has launched its own investigations to determine the identities of those involved and whether they include U.S. citizens, while denying any government involvement in planning the incident.
