A Michigan man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, bringing an end to a case that prosecutors described as a devastating example of domestic violence. Martin Yost, 45, was convicted of first-degree premeditated murder in connection with the November 2023 death of 45-year-old Dhoua Lao.

Lao, a mother of two, was discovered dead inside the passenger compartment of Yost’s vehicle in Roseville, Michigan. Police found Yost unconscious in the driver’s seat when they arrived at the scene.

Woman Found Dead Inside Vehicle

The fatal incident occurred on Nov. 13, 2023. According to prosecutors, Yost attacked Lao, causing severe injuries to her head and face that ultimately resulted in her death.

Authorities later located the couple’s vehicle in Roseville. Lao was found in the passenger seat, while Yost was unconscious behind the wheel.

Yost and Lao had reportedly been in a relationship for approximately two months before the killing. Lao’s death left behind two children and a grieving family.

Previous Domestic Violence Convictions

Court and corrections records show that Yost had previously faced domestic violence-related convictions. Records from the Michigan Department of Corrections indicate he had received sentences in 2015 and 2020 in connection with earlier domestic violence offenses.

The history has added further concern to a case that prosecutors say demonstrates the potentially deadly consequences of repeated domestic abuse.

Life Sentence Brings Case to a Close

Yost was sentenced to life in prison on Aug. 20, 2026, following his conviction for first-degree premeditated murder.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said the case represented one of the most tragic outcomes of domestic violence. He expressed hope that the sentence would give Lao’s family some measure of justice and closure, while acknowledging that no court decision could reverse their loss.

The case serves as another reminder of the serious dangers associated with domestic violence and the importance of seeking help when abuse or threats escalate.
