A cruise ship lifeguard was arrested in Miami after authorities accused him of engaging in unlawful sexual activity with a 17-year-old passenger during a recent voyage.

Rafael Cayetano Blanco, 38, a Guatemalan national who worked as a lifeguard aboard MSC World America, was taken into custody on August 22 after the vessel returned to PortMiami, according to an arrest affidavit. He faces a charge of sexual activity with a minor.

Authorities Say Encounters Happened During Cruise

According to the arrest affidavit, Blanco and the teenage passenger first met aboard the ship on August 16. The two reportedly exchanged phone numbers, after which the passenger went to Blanco’s cabin later that evening.

Authorities allege that sexual activity occurred during that visit. Investigators say the teenager returned to the crew member’s cabin on August 19, when another encounter allegedly took place.

Following his arrest, Blanco reportedly acknowledged the encounters during an interview with investigators after being advised of his legal rights.

The allegations remain part of an ongoing criminal case, and Blanco has not been convicted.

Arrest Followed Ship’s Return to Miami

MSC World America departed Miami on August 15 as part of a Caribbean voyage and returned to PortMiami on August 22. Blanco was arrested after the ship arrived back in Florida.

Court and jail records indicate that he was being held in Miami-Dade County and had an immigration hold placed on him.

The cruise operator said it contacted law enforcement after learning about the alleged conduct and cooperated with the investigation. The company also confirmed that the crew member was dismissed from his position.

Investigation Continues

The case comes as authorities continue to investigate allegations involving inappropriate conduct toward minors aboard cruise ships.

For Blanco, the current case centers on the alleged encounters with the 17-year-old passenger and the charge filed following the investigation. Further legal proceedings will determine how the case develops.
