Deadly Bondi Beach Shooting: Father-Son Duo Target Jewish Festival in Sydney 1x 1

Tragedy Unfolds at Bondi Beach

Sydney was rocked on 14 December 2025 when two men opened fire during a popular Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, killing at least 15 people and injuring many more, including children and elderly attendees. The event, known locally as “Chanukah by the Sea”, drew families, community members, and visitors to Archer Park when the attack began in the early evening.

Emergency services rushed to the scene as panic spread among the crowd. Several victims were treated on site before being transported to hospitals across the city. Law enforcement has classified the incident as an antisemitic terror attack, heightening concern across Australia’s Jewish communities and beyond.

Suspects Identified: Licensed Firearms Involved

Police have identified the alleged shooters as a father and son, aged approximately 50 and 24, who used legally owned firearms during the assault. The older man was shot and killed by responding officers at the scene, while his son was critically wounded and taken into custody under guard. Authorities recovered several guns believed to have been used in the attack, all registered to the father.

The younger suspect, an Australian-born resident, had been previously examined by national security agencies over alleged connections to extremist networks, though officials said he was not considered an immediate threat at the time.

Aftermath and Nationwide Response

The devastating attack has triggered shock and grief throughout Australia and internationally. Political leaders, including the Prime Minister and New South Wales Premier, have condemned the violence and emphasised support for the victims and their families. ◆ There are calls for stronger gun control measures, including tighter restrictions on firearm ownership and licensing, with discussions underway at upcoming national cabinet meetings.

Community vigils and memorials have sprung up around Bondi Beach, with hundreds leaving flowers and tributes in honour of those killed. Religious leaders and civil society groups have also urged unity and resilience in the face of hate-motivated violence.
