Authorities in South Africa are investigating the discovery of another woman’s body in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg, bringing the number of female victims found in the area since July to 11. The latest discovery has intensified concerns about a possible connection between several killings, although police have not confirmed that the cases were carried out by the same person or group.
Latest Body Discovered in Springs
Police said the latest victim was found in Springs on Sunday after a private security company noticed the body while patrolling the area. Investigators are working to establish the woman’s identity and determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
The discovery followed the finding of another woman’s body near Tembisa a day earlier. Police said the 10th victim appeared to have died violently, while further forensic examinations are expected to provide additional information about the cause of death.
A 36-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the Tembisa killing. Police allege that he left the area after the incident and traveled to Tzaneen in Limpopo, nearly 400 kilometers away. He was arrested on Saturday evening and is expected to appear in court.
Police Investigate Possible Links Between Cases
The investigation began after three women were found dead in July and August within a relatively short distance of one another in Ekurhuleni. The discovery of six additional bodies over a 10-day period earlier in September increased concerns that some of the deaths could be connected.
However, authorities have stressed that there is currently no conclusive evidence proving that all of the killings are related. Investigators are examining each case separately while also looking for similarities that could establish potential links.
Two women have also appeared in court in connection with one of the earlier killings. They are scheduled to return to court on October 1.
Growing Concern Over Violence Against Women
The deaths have renewed public concern about gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa, where violence against women remains a major national issue.
South African authorities have expanded investigative efforts involving specialized police teams and forensic investigators as they work to establish what happened to the victims and whether connections exist between the cases.
For now, investigators continue to gather forensic evidence and information from communities in Ekurhuleni. Police have not confirmed the existence of a serial killer, and the circumstances surrounding several of the deaths remain under investigation.
