At least 11 people were killed and three others injured after armed men opened fire on a group gathered at a house in KwaMakhutha, a township south of Durban in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province. The shooting happened late Tuesday night, September 22, with police launching a manhunt for the attackers.
Gunmen Attack Gathering in KwaMakhutha
According to police, 13 men and one woman were inside a house in the Ziko area of KwaMakhutha when three armed men reportedly entered and began shooting.
Ten victims, including the woman who was believed to be pregnant, died at the scene. Four others were taken to hospital, where one later died from gunshot wounds. Three people survived the attack with injuries.
The incident took place around 30 kilometers south of Durban. Local officials said the attack has left residents and relatives of the victims in shock.
Police Investigate Possible Gang Connection
Authorities have not established a definitive motive for the shooting. However, police said a conflict involving rival groups could not be ruled out.
Investigators also said preliminary inquiries indicated that some of the victims had previously come to the attention of Crime Intelligence in connection with alleged illegal activities. Police have not released further details, saying that doing so could affect the ongoing investigation.
A vehicle believed to belong to one of the victims was also reportedly set on fire during the incident, adding another element to the investigation.
Manhunt Underway for Three Suspects
South African police have launched a search for the three suspects believed to have carried out the attack. Authorities are continuing to examine the crime scene and gather evidence while investigators work to establish what led to the shooting.
KwaZulu-Natal authorities have also expressed condolences to the families of those killed and said law enforcement agencies are pursuing leads in an effort to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police have yet to confirm the motive or announce any arrests.
