A Chicago man has been arrested weeks after authorities say he remained inside a downtown Macy’s store overnight and allegedly stole merchandise and food. The incident reportedly took place at the Macy’s on State Street on June 28, with the suspect later identified as 53-year-old Roy Pughsley.
According to authorities, Pughsley allegedly spent the night inside the department store, took clothing and wore the items, and obtained food from restaurants operating inside the store before leaving in the early morning hours.
Suspect Allegedly Stayed Inside Macy’s Overnight
The incident reportedly began on June 28 at the Macy’s located on State Street in downtown Chicago. Authorities say Pughsley remained inside the store after normal business hours.
During the alleged overnight stay, he reportedly took clothing from the store and put the items on. He also allegedly took food from restaurants located within the Macy’s.
Authorities said he eventually left the store at approximately 3:25 a.m., carrying merchandise that had not been paid for.
Macy’s Employees Later Recognized the Suspect
The case remained unresolved for several weeks until August 3, when Macy’s employees reportedly contacted authorities after seeing someone they believed matched the description of the person involved in the earlier incident.
Investigators said the man was wearing the same type of shoes and carrying the same backpack that had been seen during the June incident. The suspect was subsequently identified as Pughsley.
The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office later charged him with burglary and felony retail theft in connection with the alleged incident.
Previous Arrests Reported in Chicago
Court records indicate that Pughsley had previously been arrested in Chicago multiple times. Authorities say he had been taken into custody 25 times since 2017, including five arrests between February and April 2026.
He was also arrested on June 3 in connection with allegations involving unlawful use of a weapon and trespassing.
The latest case involves allegations only, and the charges against Pughsley remain subject to the legal process.
