German Court Hands Down Life Sentence in Munich Car-Ramming Case

A German court has sentenced a 25-year-old Afghan man to life in prison for carrying out a fatal car attack during a trade union demonstration in Munich in February 2025. The incident claimed the lives of a 37-year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter while leaving more than 40 others injured.

The Munich Higher Regional Court ruled that the crime was of “particular gravity,” a legal designation that significantly reduces the likelihood of early release under German law. The defendant was convicted on multiple charges, including two counts of murder and 23 counts of attempted murder.

Attack Targeted Peaceful Union Demonstration

According to court findings, the attacker deliberately drove his vehicle into a large trade union rally where workers were gathering to demand higher wages. The violent incident shocked Germany and drew widespread condemnation across the country.

Authorities said the man admitted responsibility for the attack. Prosecutors argued that his actions were driven by religious extremism and were intended as retaliation for what he believed was the suffering of Muslims in several countries.

Court Finds Crime Exceptionally Serious

The court concluded that the severity of the attack justified a life sentence with a special ruling recognizing the exceptional seriousness of the crime. Under Germany’s legal system, this classification generally prevents parole after the standard 15-year minimum term.

The case also intensified public debate over immigration, national security, and extremist violence in Germany, as the attack occurred during a period of heightened political discussion ahead of national elections.
