Hong Kong Police Detain Five Over Alleged Seditious Books
Hong Kong authorities have arrested five individuals connected to two independent bookstores as part of an investigation into the sale and distribution of publications alleged to contain seditious content. The operation is the latest action under the city’s national security laws, which continue to draw global attention.
Police said the arrests followed an investigation triggered by customs officials after a shipment of books arriving from overseas was flagged. Officers later carried out searches at two bookstores in the Mong Kok district and seized multiple books believed to violate the law.
Authorities Say Books Promoted Hatred Against Government
According to investigators, the seized publications were suspected of encouraging hatred toward the Hong Kong government, the judiciary, and law enforcement agencies. Officials stated that the five suspects are being investigated for acts allegedly carried out with seditious intent under Hong Kong’s national security framework.
Hong Kong Security Secretary Chris Tang said booksellers have a responsibility to ensure that the materials they sell do not threaten national security. However, authorities have indicated they will not publish an official list of prohibited books, explaining that each publication will be assessed based on its content.
Independent Bookstores Face Growing Pressure
The latest arrests represent the third known police operation involving independent bookstores in Hong Kong this year. One of the targeted bookstores had already announced plans to close, citing financial difficulties and uncertainty over what publications could legally be sold.
The crackdown reflects the broader enforcement of national security legislation introduced after the 2019 anti-government protests. Critics argue that the measures have significantly reduced freedom of expression, while Hong Kong authorities maintain that the laws are necessary to safeguard national security and public order.
