Charlie Kirk Murder Case: Investigator Shares New Details of Search for Suspect
The preliminary hearing in the murder case of political activist Charlie Kirk has brought fresh insight into the investigation that followed his fatal shooting at Utah Valley University. Testimony from the lead investigator outlined how law enforcement rapidly launched a large-scale manhunt after the attack, relying on surveillance footage, witness accounts, and public assistance to identify the suspect.
The hearing is part of the legal process to determine whether prosecutors have presented enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial.
Investigator Says Case Began Without Prior Knowledge of Charlie Kirk
Lead investigator David Hull told the court that he had never heard of Charlie Kirk or visited Utah Valley University before being assigned to the high-profile case. Despite his unfamiliarity, Hull said his priority quickly became identifying the shooter responsible for the deadly attack.
According to testimony, investigators gathered video from multiple locations around the campus and carefully reviewed footage showing the suspect’s movements before and after the shooting. Authorities also received numerous tips from the public, helping investigators narrow their search.
The investigation eventually led officers to Tyler Robinson, who has been charged with aggravated murder and several additional felony offenses.
Evidence Presented During Preliminary Hearing
Former university police officer Christopher Bagley also testified, describing the moments after the shooting. He told the court that he discovered what appeared to be a makeshift sniper position on a nearby rooftop with a direct view of the event.
Prosecutors indicated they plan to introduce additional evidence, including surveillance videos, digital communications, and text messages allegedly linked to the defendant. The court is expected to review multiple pieces of evidence as prosecutors attempt to establish probable cause for a trial.
If the judge determines sufficient evidence exists, the case will move forward to the next stage of criminal proceedings.
Family Attends Emotional Court Proceedings
Charlie Kirk’s widow, parents, and several supporters attended the hearing. Court testimony included graphic descriptions of the shooting, prompting some family members to leave the courtroom during portions of the proceedings.
The Kirk family has continued to ask for privacy while expressing appreciation for the support they have received throughout the investigation and legal process.
The preliminary hearing is expected to continue as prosecutors present additional witnesses and evidence related to the case.
