Thai Airways Employee Held After Alleged Heroin Discovery at Melbourne Airport
A 26-year-old Thai Airways employee has been arrested in Australia after authorities allegedly uncovered more than one kilogram of heroin concealed inside luggage at Melbourne Airport.
According to Australian officials, the airline employee arrived in Melbourne while on duty aboard an international flight. During routine baggage screening, border officers noticed irregularities in several tote bags, prompting a detailed inspection.
Authorities claim the narcotics were hidden inside the lining of 12 tote bags. The seized heroin is estimated to have a street value of approximately AU$500,000 (around US$345,000).
Australian Police File Drug Importation Charges
Following the discovery, the Australian Federal Police arrested the employee and charged her with importing and possessing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug.
If convicted, she could face a maximum prison sentence of 25 years under Australian law. The accused has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before a Melbourne court later this year.
Australian law enforcement officials said they remain committed to identifying anyone who attempts to use trusted professional positions to facilitate illegal drug trafficking.
Thai Airways Cooperating With Investigation
Thai Airways confirmed that one of its employees had been detained by Australian authorities and said the airline is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
The airline stated that it maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy toward illegal drugs and will conduct its own disciplinary review alongside the criminal investigation. Thai authorities are also working with Australian agencies as inquiries continue.
Officials in Thailand have used the incident to remind travelers and airline staff never to transport luggage or packages on behalf of others without knowing their contents.
Investigation Continues
Australian investigators have not indicated whether additional suspects are involved, and inquiries remain ongoing. Authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged drug smuggling attempt and whether it may be linked to a broader trafficking network.
