ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan Faces New Suspension

International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan has been suspended by Britain’s independent regulator for barristers, adding another layer to the ongoing controversy surrounding the senior legal official.

The suspension took immediate effect and will be reviewed during a hearing scheduled within the next four weeks. Khan has denied all allegations against him and maintains that he has done nothing improper.

Misconduct Allegations Continue to Impact ICC Leadership

The 56-year-old British lawyer had already been placed under suspension earlier this month by the ICC’s governing authorities. The move follows a lengthy investigation into allegations involving inappropriate conduct with a younger female staff member.

According to findings from an external inquiry, investigators concluded there was a factual basis for claims that a non-consensual relationship had taken place. Khan has consistently rejected the accusations and has said he intends to challenge the decisions against him.

His supporters have argued that the accusations may have political dimensions linked to his efforts to pursue cases involving Israeli leaders over the Gaza conflict.

ICC Member States to Decide Khan’s Future

The controversy has created a leadership crisis within the Hague-based court, which prosecutes war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. Khan has been on voluntary leave since 2025, with his deputies taking over his responsibilities.

Meanwhile, representatives from the ICC’s 125 member nations are expected to hold a special session on July 24 to determine whether Khan should remain in his position.

The court is also facing pressure from the United States, which has imposed sanctions on several ICC officials following investigations related to Israel and previous inquiries involving U.S. military actions.
