US Court Clears Use of Meng Wanzhou’s Admissions in Huawei Case
A federal judge in the United States has ruled that statements previously made by Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou may be used as evidence against the Chinese technology giant during its upcoming criminal trial. The decision represents another significant step in the years-long legal battle involving allegations related to Iran sanctions.
Meng had reached an agreement with U.S. prosecutors in 2021 that led to the dismissal of criminal charges against her. As part of that arrangement, she acknowledged making misleading representations to a financial institution regarding Huawei’s activities and compliance with U.S. sanctions regulations.
Judge Rejects Huawei’s Objections
U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly ruled that Huawei cannot prevent prosecutors from introducing Meng’s statements during the trial. The court concluded that the comments were connected to her responsibilities as the company’s chief financial officer and were effectively adopted by Huawei.
The company had argued that it should not be bound by statements made by an individual executive and maintained that using those admissions would violate its rights. However, the judge dismissed those arguments and stated that cross-examination of Meng would not be necessary for the evidence to be admitted.
Huawei had not publicly commented immediately following the ruling.
Long-Running Legal Dispute Dates Back to 2018
Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada in 2018 at the request of U.S. authorities, triggering diplomatic tensions between the United States, China, and Canada. She remained under house arrest in Vancouver for nearly three years before returning to China after reaching a deferred prosecution agreement.
The broader criminal case against Huawei includes allegations of bank fraud and accusations that the company concealed business activities linked to Iran. Separate charges involving trade secret theft have also been brought against the telecom giant.
Jury selection in the case is scheduled to begin on September 8, 2026.
Huawei Continues Expanding Despite Legal Challenges
Despite facing U.S. restrictions and ongoing litigation, Huawei has managed to strengthen its position in several sectors. The company has expanded into areas such as artificial intelligence technologies and smart vehicle components, helping it maintain growth amid continuing geopolitical and legal pressures.
