Port-au-Prince Faces Another Violent Surge

A renewed outbreak of gang violence in Haiti has forced hundreds of families to flee their homes in Port-au-Prince as armed groups continue to tighten their control over large parts of the capital.

Residents escaped neighborhoods over the weekend after heavily armed gangs reportedly set homes on fire and exchanged gunfire in several areas near the city’s airport corridor. Many displaced civilians are now sleeping on roadsides or seeking temporary shelter in overcrowded locations.

The worsening violence comes as Haiti continues to struggle with political instability and a security vacuum that intensified after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. Armed gangs are believed to control most sections of Port-au-Prince, with criminal activities spreading into surrounding regions.

Hospitals Evacuated as Gun Battles Intensify

Medical services in affected areas have been severely disrupted due to the clashes. Humanitarian organizations confirmed that hospitals in the Cité Soleil district were forced to evacuate patients after bullets struck nearby compounds during ongoing fighting.

Doctors and emergency teams treated dozens of gunshot victims within hours as hundreds of frightened residents rushed to hospitals seeking safety. One healthcare facility suspended operations completely after security concerns escalated.

Aid groups warned that civilians and medical workers are increasingly caught in the crossfire, leaving many communities without access to urgent healthcare services.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens Across Haiti

International organizations say gang-related violence has displaced more than 1.4 million people across Haiti, with many families living in temporary camps under difficult conditions.

Businesses near Toussaint Louverture International Airport have also raised concerns about deteriorating security and poor infrastructure, saying authorities have struggled to regain control of the area.

Meanwhile, efforts to stabilize the Caribbean nation through an international security mission continue to face delays and staffing shortages. Haiti’s leadership has acknowledged that the ongoing insecurity could also impact plans for future elections.
