A 29-year-old man has been formally charged days after a devastating fire tore through a large Kimberly-Clark warehouse in Ontario, California. Authorities say the blaze, which erupted in the early hours of April 7, caused extensive damage estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars and is now being treated as a deliberate act.
🏭 Suspect Arrested and Facing Serious Charges
Investigators identified the suspect as Chamel Abdulkarim, a warehouse worker employed through a third-party logistics company. He was taken into custody shortly after the fire and later charged with multiple arson-related offenses, including federal charges linked to interstate commerce.
If convicted, he could face a prison sentence ranging from several years to decades. Prosecutors allege that he not only started the fire but also documented the act and made statements indicating responsibility through messages and recorded footage.
🔥 Fire Erupts Into Massive Six-Alarm Emergency
The fire began shortly after midnight inside the massive warehouse filled with paper products, which quickly fueled the flames. Within minutes, the situation escalated into a six-alarm blaze, prompting a large-scale response from emergency services.
Around 175 firefighters and multiple truck units were deployed to contain the inferno. Crews initially attempted to fight the fire from inside but were forced to retreat due to the intensity, eventually battling it from outside.
Despite the scale of destruction, all workers inside the facility were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
💰 Alleged Motive and Ongoing Investigation
Authorities say the suspect may have been motivated by frustration over wages and working conditions. Investigators are reviewing social media videos and messages in which he allegedly expressed dissatisfaction and admitted involvement.
The fire caused an estimated $500 million in losses, including destroyed goods and structural damage to the warehouse, making it one of the most significant industrial fires in recent years.
Multiple agencies, including federal investigators, are continuing to examine the incident, and the accused is scheduled to appear in court again in the coming days.
