French police have detained two more individuals in connection with a suspected terrorist plot targeting a Bank of America office in Paris, intensifying an ongoing investigation into what officials say could have been a deadly attack. The arrests come after security forces thwarted an attempted bombing in the city’s upscale 8th arrondissement, preventing potential casualties.
Foiled Attack in Central Paris
The incident unfolded in the early hours of March 28, when police patrols spotted suspicious activity outside the bank building. Officers intervened as a suspect attempted to ignite an improvised explosive device made from flammable liquids and explosive material.
Authorities confirmed that the device, though crude, had the potential to cause serious harm if detonated. One suspect was arrested at the scene, while another initially managed to flee before later arrests were made.
Additional Arrests and Ongoing Probe
Investigators have since taken more suspects into custody, including individuals believed to have been involved in planning or assisting the attempted attack. Officials stated that some suspects are minors, and under French counterterrorism laws, they can be held for extended questioning.
The case is being handled by France’s anti-terrorism prosecutor, with charges including attempted destruction using explosives and participation in a criminal conspiracy. Authorities are also examining whether one accomplice was recording the act, suggesting coordination among the group.
Possible International Links Under Review
French officials are exploring potential links between the suspects and foreign-backed networks. While no firm conclusions have been reached, authorities have noted similarities between this incident and other recent attacks on U.S.-linked or sensitive sites across Europe.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez indicated that such plots may involve intermediaries recruited to carry out attacks, often without direct ties to larger organizations. Security has been heightened nationwide as a precaution amid broader geopolitical tensions.
