Detroit Mother Charged After Tragic Shooting of 6-Year-Old Girl

Authorities in Detroit have charged a 41-year-old mother after a heartbreaking incident in which her 11-year-old son allegedly shot and killed his 6-year-old sister with a handgun left unsecured in their vehicle. The shooting occurred on March 2 in a parking lot while the children were waiting in the family’s van.

Police say the young girl suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, she later died from her injuries. Investigators described the tragedy as a preventable incident tied to unsafe firearm storage.

The case has sparked renewed discussions about responsible gun ownership and the dangers of leaving firearms accessible to children.

Children Left Alone in Vehicle Before Shooting

According to investigators, the mother allegedly left five children—ranging in age from about 2 to 11 years old—inside a parked van while she went into a nearby restaurant around midday.

During that time, police believe the 11-year-old boy discovered a handgun inside the vehicle that had not been secured. Authorities say the boy fired the weapon, striking his younger sister in the head.

Emergency responders were called to the scene shortly after noon and found the child critically injured. She was transported to a hospital but did not survive.

Officials said several other children were present in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Mother Faces Multiple Criminal Charges

Following the investigation, prosecutors charged the mother with several offenses related to the incident. The charges include failing to safely store a firearm, multiple counts of second-degree child abuse, and felony firearm violations.

Authorities also reported that additional unsecured firearms were found during the investigation, raising concerns about firearm safety in the home.

Prosecutors said the emotional impact of the tragedy will likely remain with the surviving children for years. Officials emphasized that proper gun storage laws exist to prevent such incidents and urged gun owners to secure firearms away from children.

Calls for Greater Gun Safety Awareness

Law enforcement leaders described the shooting as a stark reminder of the risks associated with leaving firearms accessible to minors. They stressed that tragedies like this can often be avoided with responsible storage practices such as gun locks and secure safes.

The case continues to move through the legal system, and court proceedings are expected in the coming weeks.
