Westtown School Makes History with Double Friends Schools League Basketball Championships
PHILADELPHIA — In a dominant showing for Westtown School athletics, both the girls’ and boys’ varsity basketball teams captured Friends Schools League (FSL) titles on Friday night at La Salle University’s John E. Glaser Arena. This marks the first time since 2022 that both programs have secured the league championship in the same season, reasserting the school’s stronghold on Pennsylvania independent school basketball.
The Westtown girls extended their dynasty, securing a sixth consecutive FSL crown with a gritty 53-46 victory over archrival Friends’ Central. Despite the eventual triumph, the win was far from guaranteed. The Moose struggled significantly in the opening minutes, plagued by uncharacteristic turnovers and poor shooting that saw them trailing 18-8 early in the second quarter. Visibly distracted and fighting against negative body language, the team had to claw their way back against a Phoenix squad that threatened to end their historic run.
Key adjustments and standout performances from Jordyn Palmer and Jada Lynch ultimately turned the tide. Palmer, a national standout who has competed for the U17 national team, led all scorers with a game-high 18 points, including eight crucial points in the fourth quarter. Lynch added 11 points, while Ashley Kreiger contributed a decisive bucket with under two minutes to play to seal the victory.
On the boys’ side, Westtown ended a three-year championship drought by dethroning the two-time defending champions, Academy of the New Church (ANC), with a 64-54 win. The victory was particularly impressive given the roster’s youth; the Moose started no seniors, relying instead on a talented core of sophomores and juniors to outpace an experienced ANC team.
Sophomore point guard Rowan Phillips was the catalyst for the boys, dropping a team-high 20 points and controlling the tempo throughout the contest. Marshall Bailey added 15 points, while Ajani Stewart and Wilson Udo each chipped in 11. The win re-establishes the boys’ program at the top of the league, a position they previously held for eight consecutive seasons between 2014 and 2022.
The double victory at La Salle highlights a resurgence for the boys and a continuation of dominance for the girls, cementing Westtown’s reputation as a premier basketball powerhouse in the region.
