Kathy Ruemmler Resigns from Goldman Sachs After Epstein Emails Surface
NEW YORK – Kathy Ruemmler, the top legal officer at Goldman Sachs and a former White House counsel to President Barack Obama, has resigned from her position following the release of new documents revealing a years-long relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Deep Search: The “Girls” Email and Uncle Jeffrey
Newly released files have exposed a series of communications between Ruemmler and Epstein that continued well after his 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution from a minor. The correspondence, which spans from 2014 to 2019, contradicts earlier assertions of a strictly professional distance.
In one specific exchange, Ruemmler vented to Epstein about professional pressures, writing, “Most girls don’t have to worry about this crap.” Epstein’s reply was stark: “‘girls?’ ,, careful I will renew an old habit, .”
The documents further reveal that Ruemmler frequently referred to Epstein with affectionate terms such as “Uncle Jeffrey” and “older brother.” She also accepted luxury gifts from the financier, including a Hermès handbag and a fur-trimmed coat. In one email thanking him for a gift, she wrote, “So lovely and thoughtful! Thank you to Uncle Jeffrey!!!”
Objections: “Professional Relationship” Defense
Despite the personal tone of the emails, Ruemmler and her representatives have maintained that her interactions with Epstein were professional in nature. She was a partner at the law firm Latham & Watkins during the period of their correspondence, and her team argues that cultivating connections with wealthy individuals was part of her role in private practice.
In a statement addressing her departure, Ruemmler said, “I made the determination that the media attention on me, relating to my prior work as a defense attorney, was becoming a distraction.” She has previously stated that she “regrets ever knowing” Epstein. Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon accepted her resignation, which is effective June 30, acknowledging her as a “mentor and friend” to many at the firm. A spokesperson for Ruemmler previously called the scrutiny of her interactions “despicable,” arguing she is being unfairly targeted for benign interactions.
Background: From White House to Wall Street
Ruemmler served as White House Counsel to President Barack Obama from 2011 to 2014, becoming one of his longest-serving top aides. After leaving the administration, she entered private practice at Latham & Watkins, where her contact with Epstein reportedly began. She joined Goldman Sachs in 2020 as legal chief, a role that placed her among the most powerful women in global finance.
The resignation marks a significant reversal for the bank, which had initially stood by Ruemmler when her name first appeared in Epstein-related documents. The latest tranche of emails, however, provided a level of detail regarding the personal nature of their relationship that reportedly made her continued tenure untenable.
