US Central Command Completes Transfer of Over 5,700 ISIS Detainees from Syria to Iraq
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Friday the successful conclusion of a large-scale operation to transfer thousands of ISIS detainees from Syria to the custody of Iraqi authorities. The mission, which began on January 21 and spanned 23 days, involved the transport of more than 5,700 adult ISIS fighters. The operation was finalized following a nighttime flight from northeastern Syria to Iraq on February 12.
According to a statement released by CENTCOM, the transfer was executed to ensure the continued secure detention of the fighters and to mitigate the risk of an ISIS resurgence in Syria. U.S. and Coalition forces, operating under the Combined Joint Task Force—Operation Inherent Resolve, were responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing the mission in cooperation with regional partners.
Military officials commended the joint forces for their professionalism during the complex operation. General Brad Cooper praised the execution of the mission on the ground and in the air, expressing appreciation for Iraq’s leadership and its recognition that the transfer was essential for regional security. Major General Kevin Lambert added that the safe and orderly transfer serves as a significant step in preventing the terrorist group from reorganizing within Syria.
