Syria Signs Major Wind Power Agreement with UAE Firm to Boost National Grid
Syria’s Ministry of Electricity has officially entered into a strategic partnership with the United Arab Emirates-based firm MARV Energy. The agreement, signed today, focuses on a substantial expansion of Syria’s renewable energy infrastructure through the installation of new wind power facilities. This collaboration marks a notable development in the country’s efforts to rehabilitate its energy sector and address persistent power shortages.
Under the terms of the new deal, MARV Energy is tasked with the installation of 140 wind power turbines. The project is designed to significantly increase the capacity of the local power grid. Officials estimate that once the turbines are fully operational, they will generate approximately 700 megawatts (MW) of electricity. This specific output target is substantial in the context of the country’s current energy landscape.
The Ministry has indicated that the projected 700MW generation capacity corresponds to roughly 10% of Syria’s entire national electricity requirement. By integrating this renewable energy source, the initiative aims to reduce the gap between supply and demand that has affected the region. The move also signals a shift toward diversifying energy sources, moving beyond traditional thermal power plants to include more sustainable, green energy solutions.
This agreement underscores a continuing trend of economic cooperation between Syria and the UAE, particularly in vital infrastructure sectors. As the country looks to stabilize its utilities, foreign investment and technical expertise in renewable energy are viewed as critical components for long-term recovery. The successful implementation of these 140 turbines would represent one of the largest single additions to the national grid in recent years, potentially setting a precedent for future renewable projects in the region.
