Ten Dead Including Suspect in School Shooting and Connected Home Incident in British Columbia
Authorities in British Columbia have confirmed that ten people have died following a mass shooting at a secondary school and a related discovery at a nearby residence on Tuesday. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that eight people, including the suspect, died at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, while two additional bodies were found at a home believed to be connected to the shooter.
The incident unfolded on Tuesday in the small town of Tumbler Ridge, located approximately 1,000 kilometers north of Vancouver. Police responded to reports of an active shooter at the high school, which serves roughly 175 students in grades 7 through 12. Upon entering the building to locate the threat, officers discovered multiple victims inside. According to an RCMP statement, the individual believed to be the shooter was found deceased at the scene with what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury.
In addition to the fatalities, officials stated that more than 25 people were injured during the attack. Two of the victims were airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, while a third victim succumbed to their wounds while being transported. The majority of the other injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd, the North District Commander, addressed the media regarding the investigation, describing the event as a “rapidly evolving and dynamic situation.” He confirmed that investigators have identified the shooter but declined to release a name at this stage. Floyd noted that the motive remains unclear, stating, “We are not in a place to understand why or what may have motivated this tragedy.”
The investigation expanded beyond the school grounds when police discovered two more deceased individuals at a local residence. Investigators are currently working to establish the precise relationship between the victims at the home and the shooter, as well as the timeline of events.
The Peace River South School District had earlier issued a “lockdown and secure and hold” order for both Tumbler Ridge Secondary and the nearby elementary school as the situation unfolded. Larry Neufeld, the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Peace River South, indicated that significant resources, including additional police and ambulance support, had been deployed to the remote community to assist with the aftermath.
School shootings of this magnitude are historically rare in Canada, making the tragedy particularly shocking for the nation. Tumbler Ridge, a close-knit community of about 2,400 people near the Alberta border, has been left reeling. “This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community,” Superintendent Floyd added in his statement.
Authorities have secured the scene and are urging the public to avoid the area as the investigation continues. Support services are being organized for students, families, and residents affected by the violence.
