A large-scale Russian aerial attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has plunged thousands of households into freezing conditions, cutting heating and electricity just as new peace negotiations are set to begin. The strikes targeted residential districts and utility networks across major cities, exacerbating humanitarian concerns in the depths of winter.
Devastating Strike on Power and Heating Systems
In the early hours before planned diplomatic talks, Russian forces launched one of the year’s most intense missile and drone barrages against Ukrainian energy facilities. The overnight assault, involving scores of ballistic missiles and hundreds of drones, damaged key power stations and distribution lines, cutting heat to more than 1,100 residential buildings in Kyiv as temperatures dipped to around -20°C (-4°F). Officials also reported outages in Kharkiv, Odesa and other regions.
Local authorities confirmed that emergency crews are struggling to restore services amid repeated strikes, leaving many families without basic utilities in bitter winter conditions.
