DOWNERS GROVE, IL – Tragedy Strikes in West Suburbs
A tragic early-week incident in a Downers Grove apartment complex has led to a 19-year-old man facing a slate of serious charges, including first-degree murder and arson, after authorities say a pregnant woman was found fatally wounded inside her home following a fire Monday evening.
Suspect Arrested; Multiple Felony Charges Filed
Police have identified the suspect as 19-year-old Nedas Revuckas of Westmont. He was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, aggravated arson, intentional homicide of an unborn child and animal cruelty in connection with the death of 30-year-old Eliza Morales.
Authorities say Revuckas is scheduled to appear before a DuPage County judge Wednesday for a detention hearing.
Victim Found With Apparent Stab Wounds After Fire
First responders, including Downers Grove police and fire crews, were called to an apartment building on the 2300-block of Ogden Avenue shortly after 6:10 p.m. Monday after reports of a structure fire.
Inside the burning unit, firefighters discovered Morales, who was about five months pregnant, with what police described as sharp-force trauma. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another individual at the location was treated at a nearby hospital for smoke inhalation injuries, officials said.
Family Mourns and Investigation Continues
Morales leaves behind her husband and young daughter. Family members expressed heartbreak over the loss, noting that she was home preparing dinner when the attack occurred and that they did not know the suspect.
Law enforcement agencies, including the arson task force and the state fire marshal’s office, remain involved as the investigation continues and more details are gathered.
