Ex-Cubs Star Rallies Behind Local Deli After Violent Robbery anthony rizzo visits edison park s tony s italian deli in show of support after armed robbery 1

A Surprise Visit of Solidarity

Former major-league star Anthony Rizzo visited Tony’s Italian Deli & Subs in Edison Park on November 23, offering encouragement and goodwill to staff after a traumatic armed robbery earlier in the month.

His spontaneous appearance — complete with photos, autographs, and even a sandwich made in-store — provided a much-needed morale boost to the community already shaken by the crime.

What Happened During the Armed Robbery

In the early hours of November 15, Tony’s Deli was targeted by three masked intruders who smashed the front door, stormed inside, and robbed the cash registers.

An employee entering the shop at the time was threatened at gunpoint — a frightening moment that rattled both workers and neighborhood residents.

Despite the fear, the deli did not close down. That same morning, the doors reopened and locals from Edison Park came out in droves to show support, helping the business stay afloat after the violent break-in.

Why Rizzo’s Gesture Matters

The former player — now an ambassador for the Chicago Cubs — has long been known for his community and charitable involvement.

By publicly endorsing Tony’s Italian Deli and calling on fans to patronize the shop, he helped draw renewed attention and foot traffic, offering tangible support to a business in distress.

In a social media post, he urged Chicagoans: “If you’re in Chicago, go check out @tonysdeli1… an amazing family … always stepping up to support their community. Now it’s our turn to step up for them.”

His visit highlights how public-figure goodwill can help revive local confidence and restore community spirit — and reminds that small businesses often depend on their neighbors more than ever after a crisis.
