Israeli Authorities File Charges in High-Profile West Bank Killing
Israeli prosecutors have formally charged a Jewish settler in connection with the fatal shooting of Palestinian activist and community leader Awdah Hathaleen, marking one of the few cases in recent years where a settler has faced criminal prosecution over the death of a Palestinian in the occupied West Bank.
According to court documents, the accused, Yinon Levi, has been charged with reckless manslaughter, along with additional offenses including armed trespassing and property damage. The incident occurred in July 2025 in the village of Umm al-Khair, near Hebron, during clashes involving local residents and settlers.
Prosecutors Allege Fatal Shooting During Village Confrontation
Investigators allege that Levi opened fire during the confrontation, resulting in Hathaleen’s death. Prosecutors opted to pursue a reckless manslaughter charge rather than murder, a decision that carries a different legal standard and potential sentence under Israeli law.
The case attracted international attention after video footage recorded during the incident surfaced publicly. Hathaleen, known for his activism and advocacy for his community, had become a recognized figure beyond the West Bank through his involvement in documenting conditions faced by Palestinian residents.
