Missing Missouri Mother's Remains Found in Burn Pile; Two Men Arrested as Investigation Continues

Missing Missouri Woman’s Remains Recovered Months After Disappearance

A months-long search for a missing Missouri mother has ended in tragedy after investigators confirmed that human remains discovered in a rural burn pile belonged to 41-year-old Amber Simpson.

Simpson, a Kansas City resident and grandmother, was last seen on May 27 before being reported missing. Acting on an anonymous tip, law enforcement searched a property in Nelson, Missouri—about 90 miles east of Kansas City—where they uncovered burned human bones and evidence suggesting the remains had been exposed to intense fire over an extended period.

Property Owner and Second Suspect Face Evidence-Related Charges

Following the discovery, authorities arrested 54-year-old property owner Damon A. Thomason and 30-year-old Felix L. Watson. Both men have been charged with felony offenses related to abandonment of a corpse and tampering with evidence.

Investigators allege Thomason admitted noticing what appeared to be a large human leg bone in the burn pile and later instructed Watson to remove or clean up the area. Watson reportedly denied involvement, claiming he paid little attention to the burn pile and disputed its location. As of now, neither suspect has been charged with causing Simpson’s death, and the homicide investigation remains active.

Forensic Examination Revealed Extensive Burning

According to investigators, forensic experts determined the recovered bones had been severely damaged by one prolonged fire or multiple fires over time, making identification more difficult. DNA testing ultimately confirmed the remains belonged to Simpson.

Authorities continue gathering evidence to determine exactly how Simpson died and whether additional criminal charges may follow as the investigation progresses.

Family Remembers a Loving Mother

Simpson’s family has spoken publicly about their grief, remembering her as a caring mother who welcomed others into her home and remained devoted to her loved ones despite personal struggles with addiction.

Her relatives have urged the public to remember her as more than her hardships, describing her as compassionate, humorous, and deeply loved by those closest to her.
