Vermont Man Confesses to Fake Threats That Shut Down Community Theater Production

A 26-year-old Vermont man has admitted to sending threatening text messages to himself, an act that prompted a community theater group to cancel its planned production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show earlier this year.

According to investigators, the man initially reported receiving a series of disturbing and harassing messages related to the upcoming musical production. Due to the seriousness of the reported threats, the local theater company canceled the show while police launched an investigation.

Investigation Revealed Messages Originated From His Own Home

During the investigation, authorities traced the virtual phone accounts used to send the threatening texts back to an IP address registered at the man’s residence.

Police later said the suspect admitted he created the fake messages himself using an online texting service. He reportedly told investigators he wanted to leave the production because of ongoing conflicts with members of the cast and crew, rather than genuine concerns for his personal safety.

Theater Group Suffers Financial Losses

The canceled production had been scheduled to run from mid-April through early May. Following the cancellation, the nonprofit community theater reportedly suffered financial losses estimated between $11,500 and $15,000, including expenses that could not be recovered through ticket sales and concessions.

Authorities have issued the man a misdemeanor citation for filing a false report with law enforcement. The case has been referred to a local community justice program for further resolution.

Legal Consequences of Filing False Reports

Law enforcement officials emphasized that false reports consume valuable investigative resources and can create unnecessary fear within communities. In this case, the fabricated threats led to the cancellation of a public event and caused significant financial damage to the volunteer-run theater organization.

The incident serves as a reminder that making false claims to police can carry legal consequences, especially when public safety resources are mobilized in response.
