Federal Judge Throws Out Alex Murdaugh’s Civil Lawsuit
A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by former South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh, who was seeking $600,000 in legal fees from former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill.
Murdaugh argued that Hill’s alleged misconduct during his original murder trial violated his constitutional right to a fair trial, forcing him to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars defending himself. However, the court ruled that his legal argument failed because the expenses would have been incurred regardless of Hill’s actions.
The decision marks another significant legal development in the high-profile Murdaugh case, even as preparations continue for his upcoming retrial.
Court Finds No Legal Connection Between Clerk’s Conduct and Trial Costs
In the ruling, U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel concluded that Murdaugh could not establish a direct legal connection between the former clerk’s conduct and the attorney fees he paid during his first murder trial.
According to the judge, Becky Hill was not responsible for investigating the case or bringing criminal charges against Murdaugh. As a result, the court found no legal basis to require her to reimburse the defense costs.
Murdaugh claimed he withdrew approximately $600,000 from a retirement account to pay his legal team during the original trial and expects additional expenses for his retrial. Despite those claims, the court determined the lawsuit did not meet the required legal standards.
Murder Retrial Still Scheduled as Murdaugh Remains in Prison
Although the South Carolina Supreme Court previously overturned Murdaugh’s murder convictions after finding that Hill’s conduct may have influenced jurors, the latest federal ruling does not affect the upcoming criminal proceedings.
Murdaugh remains behind bars due to separate financial crime convictions after admitting to stealing millions of dollars from clients. He is currently serving lengthy federal and state prison sentences unrelated to the murder case.
His legal team has indicated it plans to appeal the dismissal of the civil lawsuit, while his retrial in the murder case is expected to move forward as scheduled next year.
