UK Police Under Investigation After Fatal Stabbing Response
Two police officers in the United Kingdom are being investigated for alleged gross misconduct after they arrested an 18-year-old stabbing victim instead of immediately recognizing his life-threatening injuries and providing urgent assistance.
The incident involves Henry Nowak, who was fatally stabbed in Southampton in December 2025. Authorities have launched a formal investigation into whether the officers’ conduct met professional policing standards during their response to the emergency.
Watchdog to Examine Officers’ Actions
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has confirmed that two Hampshire Constabulary officers are now under investigation for potential gross misconduct.
The inquiry will focus on several issues, including:
- Whether the officers failed to properly assess Henry Nowak’s medical condition.
- Whether the use of force, including handcuffing him, was appropriate.
- Whether professional standards of behavior were followed throughout the incident.
- Whether race or religion may have influenced the officers’ decisions.
Investigators emphasized that opening a gross misconduct investigation does not automatically mean disciplinary action will follow. The findings will determine whether further proceedings are necessary.
Fatal Incident Sparked National Outrage
According to investigators, the officers responded after receiving reports of an altercation. The attacker allegedly claimed he had been the victim of a racist assault, leading officers to initially treat Henry Nowak as the suspect.
Body-worn camera footage later showed Nowak repeatedly telling officers that he had been stabbed and was struggling to breathe. Despite his pleas, he was handcuffed before police later discovered his serious injuries.
The attacker, Vickrum Digwa, has since been convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years.
Investigation Continues as Family Seeks Accountability
The case has generated widespread public concern over police decision-making and emergency response procedures. It has also raised broader questions about officer training, medical assessments at crime scenes, and public confidence in policing.
The ongoing investigation will examine whether the officers’ actions breached professional standards and whether changes to policing practices are needed to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
