In a coordinated operation off the coast of Spain, law enforcement officers discovered almost 10 000 kg (10 tons) of cocaine hidden under tons of salt on a merchant vessel. The illegal shipment was found during a search of the ship, which was traveling from Brazil toward European ports when authorities intercepted it.
The extraordinary haul, packed in 294 bales, represents one of the largest ever seized from a ship at sea by Spanish police, demonstrating the scale of illicit narcotics entering Europe via maritime routes.

During the bust, officers arrested 13 crew members aboard the vessel following the discovery of the drugs and a firearm. The ship ran low on fuel after the intervention and had to be towed into Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands by Spain’s maritime rescue service.
Video footage obtained by authorities showed police painstakingly digging through the salt with shovels and by hand to retrieve the concealed packages of cocaine — then lining up to carry the heavy bales ashore.
