A shocking incident in Florida has led to serious criminal charges against a school bus driver after a train struck the vehicle while dozens of children were on board. Authorities say the situation could have turned deadly, though fortunately no one was injured.
Driver Faces Dozens of Charges After Close Call
The driver, identified as 67-year-old Yvonne Hampton, has been charged with 29 counts of child neglect along with additional charges including reckless driving and endangering an adult. Officials confirmed that the bus was carrying 29 students and one adult at the time of the incident.
According to law enforcement, the driver allegedly made a dangerous decision while approaching a railroad crossing, leading to the train hitting the rear portion of the bus. Authorities emphasized that the consequences could have been catastrophic given how close the impact was to the passengers.
Terrifying Moments Captured on Video
Video footage recorded inside the bus shows children screaming in fear as the train passed extremely close to the vehicle. Investigators reviewed the footage and reported that the driver may have ignored safety warnings at the crossing.
Officials also revealed that audio captured during the incident suggests the driver made a concerning statement about not stopping for the train, raising further questions about her judgment.
No Injuries, But Serious Safety Concerns Raised
Despite the frightening collision, no injuries were reported among the passengers. Authorities described the outcome as extremely fortunate, noting that even a slight difference in timing could have resulted in severe casualties.
Following the incident, the driver was arrested and later released, while investigations continue. Local officials have also begun reviewing transportation safety procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
