Philippines Faces Political Tension After ICC-Wanted Senator Escapes
The Philippine government has suspended a top Senate security official following a chaotic confrontation inside the Senate complex that allowed Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa to flee authorities. The senator is currently wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over alleged crimes against humanity connected to the country’s controversial anti-drug campaign.
The incident unfolded after law enforcement officers attempted to serve an arrest request linked to an ICC warrant. Reports of gunfire and confusion inside the heavily guarded Senate building triggered nationwide attention and raised questions about political interference and security failures.
Authorities confirmed that Senate security chief Mao Aplasca was removed from his position while investigations continue into the incident and the senator’s escape.
Ronald dela Rosa Evades Arrest During Senate Standoff
Ronald dela Rosa, a former national police chief and close ally of ex-President Rodrigo Duterte, had reportedly been staying inside the Senate building for protection after the ICC publicly confirmed an arrest warrant against him.
Officials said tensions escalated when security personnel and government agents clashed during attempts to detain the senator. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots inside the Senate complex, though no injuries were officially reported.
Shortly after the incident, dela Rosa disappeared from the premises. His wife later described his departure as an “escape,” while government authorities confirmed that his whereabouts remain unknown.
The ICC accuses dela Rosa of involvement in killings connected to Duterte’s anti-drug operations between 2016 and 2018. Duterte himself is already facing legal proceedings in The Hague over similar allegations.
Philippine Government Says It Will Cooperate With ICC
Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida stated that the Philippines would comply with the ICC request and acknowledged that the arrest warrant against dela Rosa is considered valid.
Government officials also warned that any effort by the senator to leave the country or avoid authorities could be treated as obstruction of justice.
Meanwhile, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called for calm as investigations continue into both the security breach and the gunfire incident inside the Senate.
The controversy has intensified political divisions in the Philippines, especially between supporters of the Marcos administration and allies of the Duterte family ahead of future national elections.
Senate Security Investigation Underway
Authorities are now reviewing security footage, witness accounts, and operational procedures inside the Senate building during the failed arrest attempt.
Critics have questioned how a high-profile politician wanted by an international court managed to evade authorities from one of the country’s most secure government facilities.
Legal experts believe the case could become a major test of the Philippines’ willingness to cooperate with international justice institutions despite previous disputes over ICC jurisdiction.
