Hidden Crypto Farm in Mexico’s Mountains Raises Concerns Over Cartel Money Laundering

Hidden Crypto Farm in Mexico's Mountains Raises Concerns Over Cartel Money Laundering 6VfBK4WLO0

A clandestine cryptocurrency mining operation uncovered in the remote mountains of Puebla, Mexico, has brought fresh attention to the evolving financial tactics of organized crime. The facility, equipped with hundreds of powerful computers and extensive electrical infrastructure, is being investigated over suspected electricity theft and possible links to money laundering.

The discovery highlights how cryptocurrency mining, a technology commonly used for legitimate digital asset transactions, can also become part of criminal financial networks. Authorities are examining the operation as Mexico expands its efforts to tackle illicit crypto activity and organized crime.

Secret Crypto Mining Facility Discovered in Puebla Mountains

The operation was found in the Sierra Norte region of Puebla, near a hydroelectric dam and away from densely populated communities. Its remote location appears to have helped conceal the constant noise and substantial electricity consumption associated with cryptocurrency mining.

Investigators discovered approximately 300 graphics processing units (GPUs), 80 medium-voltage terminals and eight satellite antennas at the site. These specialized computers are used to perform the complex calculations involved in mining digital currencies such as Bitcoin.

The facility was reportedly identified after unusual electricity usage and the persistent sound of machinery attracted attention. The discovery marks the fourth cryptocurrency mining operation uncovered in the area since early 2025.

Although the facility was relatively small compared with major commercial mining operations worldwide, its equipment and infrastructure suggested a substantial investment in technology and energy.

Electricity Theft Becomes a Major Focus of Investigation

Mexican authorities are investigating whether the mining operation illegally obtained electricity from infrastructure connected to the nearby hydroelectric complex.

Electricity is one of the largest expenses in cryptocurrency mining because specialized computers must operate continuously and generate significant heat. Cooling systems and electrical equipment add to the cost of running such facilities.

Investigators suspect that access to inexpensive or illegally obtained electricity may have made the remote location attractive. Authorities are also looking into whether the operation’s digital assets could have been used to disguise the origins of money generated through criminal activities.

The investigation involves Mexican security and law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Electricity Commission, the Attorney General’s Office and the Navy. Officials are also examining whether similar operations may exist in neighboring areas.

Cryptocurrency mining itself is not prohibited in Mexico. However, stealing electricity is a criminal offense, and authorities are focusing on whether the facility violated energy laws.

Growing Concern Over Cryptocurrency and Cartel Financing

The Puebla discovery comes as criminal organizations increasingly explore financial technologies beyond traditional drug trafficking, extortion and other illegal businesses.

Cryptocurrency can move money quickly across borders and, in some cases, make it harder for investigators to immediately identify the people behind transactions. Criminal networks may use digital currencies to transfer funds, purchase supplies or attempt to conceal proceeds from illegal activities.

Security analysts say establishing a mining operation of this scale requires technical knowledge, equipment and financial backing. That has raised questions about whether a powerful organized crime group may have supported the facility.

However, authorities have not publicly confirmed that the Puebla mining farm was operated by a specific cartel.

Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis estimated that addresses associated with illicit activity received approximately $154 billion in cryptocurrency transactions during 2025, up from $59 billion a year earlier. The increase reflects the broader growth of cryptocurrency-related crime, including activity connected to sanctions evasion.

Experts warn that the expansion of digital currencies could create new opportunities for criminal organizations, even as law enforcement agencies improve their ability to trace blockchain transactions.

Mexico Expands Efforts to Track Illegal Crypto Operations

The investigation in Puebla is part of a broader effort to identify illegal cryptocurrency mining operations and investigate potential financial crimes.

Three similar mining facilities were reportedly discovered in Puebla and Tlaxcala during 2025. Authorities are now working to determine whether more hidden operations are active in the region.

The case also reflects a growing challenge for law enforcement: distinguishing legitimate cryptocurrency businesses from operations that exploit stolen electricity or support criminal financial networks.

As digital assets become more widely used, investigators are expected to pay closer attention to the infrastructure behind crypto mining, the source of electricity powering these facilities and the movement of the digital assets they generate.

For Mexico, the remote mining farm in Puebla has become a significant lead in understanding how organized crime may be adapting to new financial technologies.
