Tragic Home Accident in Norfolk – Charges Filed

NORFOLK, VA — A frightening early-morning incident left a young child critically injured after he accidentally shot himself in the face with an unsecured firearm inside a home, police said. The 3-year-old boy was taken to a nearby hospital where he received treatment for non-life-threatening wounds and is expected to recover, authorities confirmed.

Local law enforcement swiftly arrested 21-year-old Zyquay H. Fulford in connection with the incident after determining the gun was left accessible to the toddler. Fulford now faces charges for child neglect and contributing to child endangerment following the investigation.

What Happened That Morning

The shooting occurred shortly before 10 a.m. on January 7 at a residence on Sheryl Drive in Norfolk. According to police reports, emergency services were dispatched after a neighbor reported hearing a disturbance and seeing the child injured.

Investigators say the boy found an unsecured handgun inside the home and unintentionally fired it, striking himself in the face. The young victim was quickly transported by first responders to a medical facility and is anticipated to recover with ongoing care.

Police Response and Safety Reminder

Norfolk Police Department officials stressed that careless firearm storage can lead to criminal charges and serious harm, especially when children are present. Prosecutors noted that homeowners and adults responsible for minors may face serious felony charges — such as child neglect or even involuntary manslaughter — when guns are not properly secured.

Neighbors expressed shock at the event, with one resident recounting the chaotic scene and the distress of the child’s mother as help arrived.
