Louisiana Sheriff Steps Down After Guilty Plea in Podcaster Assault Case
A longtime Louisiana sheriff has resigned from office after admitting guilt in the assault of a local podcaster who had publicly criticized his leadership for years. The plea agreement requires the sheriff to serve probation while bringing an end to his decades-long law enforcement career.
The incident has drawn significant public attention, raising questions about accountability for elected officials and the conduct of public servants.
Sheriff Admits to Assault Following Restaurant Incident
According to investigators, the confrontation occurred at a restaurant in St. Tammany Parish in late May. Authorities said the sheriff approached the podcaster from behind before allegedly placing him in a chokehold, knocking him to the ground, and striking him several times.
The victim reportedly suffered a concussion along with dental injuries and received medical treatment afterward. Witness statements and surveillance footage were used during the investigation.
Because the suspect was the parish sheriff, his own department stepped aside from the investigation, allowing state authorities to take over the case.
Plea Deal Includes Probation and Immediate Retirement
The sheriff pleaded guilty to felony second-degree battery and a misdemeanor related to public intoxication. Under the plea agreement, he accepted a probation sentence lasting between 15 and 18 months and agreed to retire immediately from office.
His resignation ends a law enforcement career spanning more than three decades. The parish’s chief deputy has assumed the role of acting sheriff until voters elect a permanent replacement.
During the legal proceedings, prosecutors emphasized that the case demonstrated that no public official is above the law and that every individual is subject to the same legal standards.
Second Suspect Also Faces Charges
Investigators also charged a local bail bondsman, alleging he encouraged the attack and later helped the sheriff leave the scene after the incident.
Meanwhile, the podcaster welcomed the outcome, saying he believed justice had been served and expressing appreciation that the case was handled fairly despite the high-profile position of the defendant.
The case has become one of Louisiana’s most closely watched public integrity matters this year, highlighting the importance of accountability and transparency within law enforcement leadership.
